Lighting Makes a Difference
This post is an oldy-but-goody. So I wanted to repost it to share with you again. I think it’s a good refresher for those who may want to change up their space this Spring. Enjoy!
I went to a seminar yesterday. It was called “Lighting 101”. It was exactly what I needed – the basics. I learned so much that I can take with me to help my clients.
Do you know how many different lighting categories there are? I had no idea! I learned about 11 different types of lighting. Here they are:
- Chandeliers – a fixture that hangs from the ceiling.
- Wall lamps – wall sconces, wall brackets, and swing arms that may or may not be permanently mounted on the wall.
- Table lamps – the most common type, also known as portables.
- Accent lamps – smaller than table lamps, sometimes decorative.
- Buffet lamps – sold in sets of two sitting on either side of a buffet table.
- Desk lamps – for functions, like reading.
- Floor lamps – sit on the floor, originated from an overgrown candle idea.
- Bridge lamp – also a floor lamp that hangs over an area to provide direct light.
- Swing-Arm lamp – used on a table, floor, or wall, pivots to offer flexibility.
- Boudoir lamp – small table lamp used at bedside or vanity, more feminine.
- Torchiere – floor lamp topped with a glass bowl that faces up to reflect light on the ceiling.
Of course, you gain versatility in a room by adding different types of lighting. Variety is the spice of life, so add some life to your space by adding more lighting.

Couldn’t agree more with this post! There are so many advantages of putting a little bit of thought into your lighting. And not sure the positives generated from doing so indoor, but outdoor too. Lamps USA has a fantastic collection of Outdoor Lighting. Check out their website!
Thanks Rachel. I’ll have to look into Lamps USA.
There are many lamp options. Thanks for sharing. Lighting shows you the clutter in a room; I think that is why people don’t use it. =)
I think you may be right =)
Great review of the different types of lighting. It DOES make a difference in a space – an important difference – as it can alter the mood enormously.
Yes, it does change the whole mood.
Thanks so much for this Janet. Lighting is NOT my strong suit so this is very helpful. 🙂
I’m glad it was helpful to you!
It’s sort of amazing when I read through this list to realize how many different types of lighting there are! The term “bridge lamp” is new to me, so thanks for enlightening me (LOL!)
Excellent pun. I’m glad you could learn something new.
Wow, that’s a lot of lighting options, and it doesn’t even take into account things like under-cabinet lighting in kitchens and bathrooms, or in-ceiling lighting. I suspect lighting is my biggest area of weakness in terms of expertise, so I’m really glad you mentioned this.
You are right that there are a lot more spaces to consider lighting for once you really dig into it.
There’s also natural light. Amazing what a difference it makes to open the blinds or curtains or have the windows cleaned. Not only can you see better, but it’s an immediate mood booster. I love all the ‘light’ categories you mentioned.
Yes, natural light is an excellent source to consider as well.
