It’s Clutter Awareness Week

Do you see your clutter? It’s called Clutter Awareness.

For most people, the answer is no. It becomes part of the background of your life and you don’t even see it anymore. That could be a definition of clutter – items that you have, but don’t use, but remain in the background of your life.

Take some time this week to examine your space – your countertops, under your bed, your desktop, next to the sofa, behind the chairs, and the top of the table. To gain a different perspective, look through a cardboard paper towel roll or take pictures. By adding that one more layer between you and your stuff, you’ll be able to more honestly evaluate your space. With your new awareness, it’s now time to declutter.

In this change of seasons, my colleague Linda Samuels of Oh So Organized says this:

The season is changing. The sun is getting stronger as the daylight lasts longer. In small ways each day, I can see and feel change happening. I delight in and embrace these joy-filled moments. I am grateful for the visible changes. They are a source of hope and movement. They mirror the possibility of changes that are harder to see.

Do you see your clutter? Really! Click To Tweet

With the power of clutter awareness and you’ll know where you need to concentrate your efforts, and you’ll be able to begin organizing your life.

Thanks for sharing. I didn’t realize it was Clutter Awareness week! It is incredible how many people have different thresholds of clutter tolerance. Some people see a small pile and say they need to declutter, while others can see a room filled with stuff and say they need to declutter. But, everyone can awaken to the clutter in their lives if they spend a moment and observe it.

Yes, that’s a very true point. Everyone experiences it differently, but it’s always good to step back and evaluate.

This is an interesting question you ask. I would say my husband would answer, “no.” I think he truly does not see it. It doesn’t bother him in the least. About once or twice a year, he’ll do an overhaul of his spaces. Otherwise, he is good to go. I can see the need to even become aware of clutter before we feel motivated to deal with it, right? I didn’t know it was Clutter Awareness Week. Neat!

Yes, if we aren’t aware of it, there’s little motivation to make any changes or process it.

Like Sabrina, I didn’t know it was Clutter Awareness week. How ironic. Thank you so much for including something I wrote. What a lovely surprise! It is such an impactful time of year when the earth wakes up and visibly blooms each day- more light, greener, more flowers. The brown, bare landscape slowly gets its color back. It’s always an inspiring season…a natural for revisiting perspectives, clearing away the stuff weighing us down, and having a hope-filled feeling that growth is coming.

Fitting to use your words in an inspiring season because you are such an inspiring person. Thanks for reading and yes, looking forward to the hope-filled feeling of growth coming.

I didn’t know it was Clutter Awareness Week either. I love your idea of looking through a paper towel roll at your spaces. You see things differently when you look through a tube – narrowing your point of focus.

Thanks, Diane. And thanks for reading.

It’s funny that so many of us were unaware that it was Clutter Awareness Week, but we are certainly aware of clutter. I have a high tolerance for certain types of clutter (paper on my desk until the end of the workday, laundry in the basket waiting an extra day to be done) and zero tolerance for other types (anything in the car or on the bedroom floor or in a hotel room). But I love the paper towel roll tip and can see applying it with clients to help them gain a different perspective.
