Time to Contain the Tupperware

Time to Contain the Tupperware

Take a few minutes to sort, purge, and contain your plastic ware. All your plastic ware – I don’t mean to pick on Tupperware. It’s also Rubbermaid, Sterilite, old take-out containers, and Gladware.

Your food storage will be so much more functional. This is one place where less is more. Actually, I often tell clients to consider having only one size of container that will stack inside each other, so every lid will fit every container and so everything will stack nicely in the frig.

Can’t narrow it down to one size? At least get rid of the tops with no bottoms, the bottoms with no tops, the warped lids, the cracked containers, and all those specialty items that you haven’t used in a long time. Stack the containers inside each other and gather all the lids together. Grab one of those discarded square containers and stand up all the lids inside. Is your plastic ware more organized? Easier to use? Organize On!

I have a friend who just pitched it all and bought a set of the glass ones, three sizes. He was so pleased with the new setup, and if you can afford it, that might be a great option! I have a variety of sizes and shapes that I’ve accumulated over the years, but I always store the bottom with the top, and I pitch any that get gross or lose their mate.

The new glass ones are very nice, I agree! Storing them together is a great way to make sure they don’t go long without their partner.

I just love those product pics on Apartment Therapy! I have cleaned up my plasticware so it’s neat and easily accessible, but it takes up more space than I would like due to it not all being stackable or nestable. I may have to consider replacing some.

Yes, sometimes it does take up more space when it’s organized. It’s a balancing act for sure.

I’ve switched over to glass containers. I use only 2 sizes – small & medium. I store the lids standing beside the stacked containers.

The bottoms with no tops are great for organizing things in drawers (deep bowls for deep drawers, short/shallow containers for those shallow drawers to contain writing implements), but yes, they definitely don’t need to be with the food storage containers.

Funnily enough, I just tidied up my food storage containers (all Rubbermaid except one lone Tupperware stolen from my mom in 1989!). I’ve moved from round to square and am slowly moving from plastic to glass containers, and love how all of Rubbermaid’s containers now let you “pop” all the lids together so they don’t roll around the cupboard. The containers are all nested, with the neat stack of lids all popped together. At least this one area of live is easy to contain!

And I love the nifty Apartment Therapy p hotos!

You are right about the bottoms being great resources for drawers, etc. The containers with the ‘pop’ lids are great, it’s easier to make sure they stay together, even if they take up a little more space.

I am a stickler for a neat container drawer! My kitchen island houses my containers the follwing way:
    – Top drawer has all the small containers for dressings and tiny leftovers
-Middle drawer has all my rectangles and squares
-Bottom drawer has all my circles
-Most of my containers are glass with a snap on lid (the kind with 3-4 snap closures)
-I stack them with the lids on, I would rather have fewer containers that are super neat without having to hunt for lids!

I recognize that different people have different needs but in my house I like it this way and when my kids empty the dishwasher, they know where everything goes and it stays neat.

You’ve got your system down and even better, you’ve got the kids on board!
