Secondhand September

Secondhand September

This September, Basic Organization is highlighting our favorite Secondhand stores in Northern Virginia.

Would you like to reduce the impact on our environment? Reduce greenhouse emissions? How about reducing items sent to the landfill? Then join Basic Organization and purchase any needed items through your local thrift stores.

Protecting our environment is a role we as an organization are committed to fulfilling.  Obviously, our primary goal with our clients is to declutter, reuse, and repurpose as much as we can. Whenever possible, we encourage our clients to donate to local thrift stores items that they no longer need.   As the saying goes, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure!”

Buying Secondhand helps to reduce the manufacturing of new goods. Thus, reducing the environmental impact of water use, chemical use, and waste generation.  In other words, helping the planet helps us!

Both of my kids and their friends are in their 20s and are big on buying secondhand. It not only helps them feel responsible and get better quality clothing, but they also feel they are not contributing to the labor issues in third-world countries.

I agree with you on the contribution to the labor issues, and I see kids more into thrifting and I’m very proud of them.

Great advice, Janet. There are some wonderful second hand stores in Sandy Springs, Georgia. We all know about Goodwill but there’s also Finders Keepers in Decatur, Georgia and Alex’s Closet in Sandy Springs among others. The clothes and other items there are gently used.

Good to know, thanks for sharing the names of the stores.

Wonderful resources! It’s always good to know where you can find secondhand items in good shape. I highly value the options in our area. Sometimes you can get a terrific deal that benefits not only the buyer, but a worthy charity and the planet. Win/win/win!

Yes yes, and the items you can find are really nice. Someone’s trash is someone else’s treasure.

I’m lucky, I live within walking distance of Mission Thrift Store in Hamilton. It’s not as large as Value Village, but it seems cleaner and I can usually find something there that I can use.

Good to know, thanks for sharing Janet.

What a great list! I’m envious of the bounty you have there in Virginia. I try to stay away from fast fashion; I don’t really shop for clothing much in the first place. But I’m not really a thrift-store/second-hand person. That said, I love to recommend it to clients and encourage them to donate and buy from these kinds of venues. Thanks for helping improve the environment.

We are lucky here. There are so many good thrift stores. This is just a small sample.
