Closet Organizing Tools

In the new book Get Organized Today Gretchen Ditto writes about some great closet-organizing tools that you can use to organize your closet.

Slim Hangers. These are super and save a lot of space.

Hanging jewelry organizer. This handy tool hangs on a closet rod or on a wall hook. Clear pockets make it easy to see all or your pieces. Outfit coordination is a breeze when you can see your accessory choices.

Under-bed storage boxes. These are great for linens, blankets, and out-of-season clothing. Just remembers to put these under a guest bed, not your bed.

Boxes or bins for shelves. Turn your shelf into a drawer by adding a nice cubby box. These are essential for hard-to-reach shelves.

Over-the-door shoe organizer. These are perfect for getting your shoes off the ground and in position so that you can see them. Do you have too many shoes? That’s not a problem. Use the over-the-door shoe organizers for your frequently worn shoes, allowing quick and easy access. Display your other “pieces of art” elsewhere. Your shoes aren’t pieces of art. Call me, we need to talk.

I hope you learned about a new closet-organizing tool that you can use to maximize your closet space.

Turning a shelf into a drawer with a bin is such a simple idea, but it can make a huge difference in your ability to access your things. I am a bit on the short side, so being able to reach up and bring down a bin, instead of struggling to pull out an item from a stack or crowded space, really makes life easier.

Seana, I’m short too! I often suggest using bins for clients who want a neat look but don’t want to take the time to fold neatly. If it’s in a bin you can’t see if it’s folded nicely or not. Simple trick.

Janet- There’s nothing quite as satisfying as an organized closet. It feels good to access your clothing easily without stress or overwhelm. I like those slim hangers, although the ones that were pictured look like the standard plastic ones. The slim ones which have a sort-of felt-like finish are terrific because they save a lot of space. But frankly, just using matching hangers (of any style) that are facing the same direction can make any closet look fantastic and function better.

Hi Linda. The hangers aren’t the slim kind, but they are colorful! I use plastic hangers like the one’s pictured. I like them better than the slim hangers, but that’s just me. I agree, matching hangers is what is most important.
