3 Unique Consignment Stores

Have you ever considered consigning your unwanted items for sale? What does that mean? First a little lesson:

A consignment store is a store that sells secondhand items (typically clothing and accessories) on behalf of the original owner, who receives a percentage of the selling price.

There are many consignment stores throughout Northern Virginia. Some are better than others, in the quality of merchandise, service to consignees, and education for customers. I’d like to offer a little help (and experience) to you.

  1. Know what you are getting into when you want to consign merchandise. Here’s a lesson that will help you decide if it’s worth your time and energy to consider contacting a consignment store.
  2. Remember that (like everything else) there is a learning curve to being successful at selling. Read these words of advice from a consignment store owner.

Here are 3 local consignment stores that I love:

Wardrobe Rescue. This is what most people think of when they think of consignment stores. Wardrobe Rescue sells clothing and accessories.

Wardrobe Rescue only sells authentic designer pieces. We thoroughly inspect and scrutinize each item that comes in to be consigned. If a consignee brings in a fake or replica item they will not be permitted to consign with us. Wardrobe Rescue stands behind every piece 100%

What I like about Wardrobe Rescue is they make it very easy for consignees. Items may be brought in without an appointment between 11 am and 5 pm Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays, by appointment on Saturdays. Most stores make appointments, with sometimes weeks (or months) long waits. The store itself is located in downtown Vienna (very convenient) and filled with a well-maintained inventory, so customers will continue to return.

Evolution Home is a hybrid consignment store, selling consignments, antiques, gifts, and handmade items. You’ll find the typical booth arrangement similar to antique malls, so it’s hard to tell what is consignment (which I like). Evolution Home is a large store selling furniture and decor of all types: new, antique, vintage, and just the quirky stuff I love. On my last visit to the store, I purchased some small Christmas gifts, a handful of record albums, a piece of framed art, and a piece of jewelry. Score! It’s like a treasure chest.

Evolution Home keeps an up-to-date photo inventory on their website, so you can browse at home if you’d like, with the possibility that the item you fall in love with is still available. They also offer staging services and whole house clean-outs, so they are more than your typical consignment store.

Carousel Consignments has an elegant mix of inventory. They sell a small amount of designer clothing and accessories, but also, furniture and decor. Carousel Consignments offers a bouquet atmosphere, where you can find wonderful entire sets of china artfully arranged on a (for sale) dining room table. It’s fun just to browse the store. It’s like visiting a gift shop.

Carousel Consignments have the typical consignment rules. You’ll find them here.  Every time I’m in this shop, I promise myself that I’ll come back soon.

Well, there you go! Do you think selling by consignment is for you? Do you want to shop in these stores? It’s can be your own treasure hunt right in Northern Virginia.
