Let’s Get Started!

There are so many small organizing projects that you can do quickly. To give you some ideas for quick projects this is a series of posts that will get you more organized and then make it easy to maintain the order. Today we will focus on what’s underneath your bathroom sink.

Under the Bathroom Sink

I know! Not the most glamorous organizing project. But wouldn’t it be great to create some extra storage in this space in your bathroom. Everyone could use more storage! Let’s look at some ways you can make a difference in 15 minutes.

First up with any organizing project is decluttering, so take everything out from underneath the sink. Toss the old and sort the rest. If you can’t remember the last time you used something, let it go. Now let’s move on to storage.

Here are some great options from Pinterest.

Here is a simple way to store cleaning supplies under your kitchen sink. Use a simple tension rod across the inside of a cabinet to hang spray bottles. It gets them up off the floor which allows you to place small bins on the floor. A simple, cheap, and easy solution.

Another amazing idea is to add height with shelves. This brilliant product works around the pipes under your sink to add as much storage as possible. See this whole organizing project at Home is Where my Heart is. This solution allows you to assign separate homes to towels, make-up, and hair products (or whatever you store under your sink).

Don’t forget the cabinet doors for storage as well. Another cheap and easy idea is to incorporate an over-the-door organizer. By cutting it to fit your door, you could probably get two or three cabinet doors covered with one organizer. I like the clear plastic since they allow you to see what you have without rummaging through each pocket. Use these for often-used items like make-up, hair brushes, and hand lotion.

Be creative. What works for you will be something that you can maintain organization with ease.

A little creativity goes a long way in a small space.

Sort, Purge, Group, Contain, Maintain.

There’s something so satisfying about organizing a small area in a short time. The funny thing is it can bother us for a LONG time, but the energy it takes to fix it, is short. One of our bathrooms has a floating glass sink, so there is no under sink storage. We designed other clever solutions in that room, which includes an invisible closet which was built into the unused space in the shower. Our other bathroom has a small hot water heater which takes up half of the cabinet. The other side has drawers. So again, no space. I placed a small open bin containing cleaning supplies that is tucked out of sight on the floor to the left of the sink cabinet. It works.

I completely agree about the small projects having great rewards but being so hard to start sometimes. You have great storage solutions for tricky bathroom cabinets!

I love 15 minutes organizing tasks! The bathroom is a great place to start and will motivate you to move to other home areas.

    I love a 15 minute project too!

That space is so cavernous and tough to get in shape. When possible, I like to add structure, like the Simple Housewares Stackable sliding basket product. it just feels so good to not have everything jumbled.

If I could tell bathroom designers one thing, I would suggest they always have drawers, not just a cabinet under the sink. Many of the small items we use in a bathroom work better in a drawer.

Great little project that makes you feel so good!

Adding structure is key. They should let us organizers design them, don’t you think?

It is amazing how much can be accomplished in just 10 or 15 minutes. Focused effort is important. I love the way you advocate using vertical space. The under the vanity cupboards can be like caverns until you add some shelves and additional storage on the doors. You offer great and easy-to-implement advice!

Yes, focused effort like you say, is the difference. It doesn’t take a lot of time to do something that will feel great when it’s done.

I always tell my clients that small victories breed great successes; 15-minute projects give you such a great sense of accomplishment that it’s exciting to move forward. And while bathrooms aren’t glamorous, we do spend a lot of time in there, fixing our making up and hair, bathing, and “the other stuff” and having an organized bathroom makes you feel so much more in control!

And I do LOVE an over-the-door organizer! Vertical is the way to go!

Thanks Julie. I love to share success with my clients and teach them how a short amount of time is all that is needed to maintain the organization we put in place.
