10 Tips to Planning an Awesome Vacation

It’s finally time to plan a vacation. With these 10 travel tips, you can have the best summer vacation ever!

  1. Find a vacation. If you don’t know where to go, research your options. Will you drive or visit the TSA lines at the airport? Plan accordingly.
  2. Book your travel 6 weeks in advance. You’ll get the best prices on domestic flights if you plan this far ahead.
  3. Make a packing list. Above all, planning ahead will give you the opportunity to delegate packing. Give each family member a list of what they need and let them do it for themselves.
  4. Find a great hotel. Use sites like Trip Advisor and read about the hidden gems others have found.
  5. Check your luggage. Even with charges for bags, avoid the hassle of schlepping through airports looking like a pack mule.
  6. Check food blogs. Find out where the locals eat by reading Traveler’s Lunchbox or google your destination plus food blog to find a great meal.
  7. Update your guidebook. Find the most updated information, not in a book, but on Wiki Travel, where you can find information on some unusual events and sightseeing.
  8. Eat breakfast at your hotel. You’ll save money and time by taking advantage of the free meal if your hotel offers one. If they don’t, make it simple with fruit and granola bars.
  9. Plan entertainment. How you will spend that layover at the airport or the lazy afternoon at the pool? Bring small toys for the kids and a book (or e-reader) for yourself.
  10. Use apps to find food. When hunger hits, you can find a place to nosh with Yelp, or Zomato, apps.

I remember when I started planning my first vacation. I had no idea what I was doing. The whole point of a vacation is to relax and relieve stress. You have compiled a awesome list of tips. It’s really going to help anyone to make his vacation the stress-free and well planned.

I think planning is important, by the way thank you very much for offering such beautiful tips.

I’m so looking forward to a vacation. I love these tips! I have packing lists on my website because over time when looking for packing lists, there wasn’t any that would work. If you visit my site, I have a checklist and printables section, and it is in there. A few examples of packing lists include THE ULTIMATE CRUISE PACKING LIST EVERYONE NEEDS and HOW TO EASILY PACK FOR A SHORE VACATION WITHOUT STRESS.

Oh, your packing list sounds great. Those are two types of vacations that I’d like to plan soon.

Looking forward to planning a vacation for sure. Like Sabrina, I have a packing list that people can use as a starter. Never heard of The Traveler’s Lunchbox… I will have to check that out:)

    • Janet Schiesl on May 4, 2021 at 12:42 pm

A packing list is a good idea. When you are planning out of your normal activities it’s easy to overlook something and no one wants to have to go shopping for socks while on vacation.

I’ve never heard of Traveler’s Lunchbox! What a great idea. I’m the type of person who likes to do what the locals do so this is perfect. Thanks for sharing.

    • Janet Schiesl on May 4, 2021 at 12:39 pm

Yes Melanie, I agree. The best meals when traveling are when you eat at local restaurants.

Oh Janet you thrilled me with this blog today, I am so eager for a trip!! Thanks for a great reminder that things will get back to some kind of normal soon!!! This was a pick me up post for sure!

    • Janet Schiesl on May 4, 2021 at 12:38 pm

Lisa. I am eager too. I think travel may be difficult this year because everyone wants to get out. Planning will be the key.

  6. Julie Bestry on May 5, 2021 at 3:21 pm

Whether doing independent travel or going on a group tour, I’m always all about the planning down to the teeniest details. (I like spontaneity, but I LOVE certitude!) I couldn’t agree with your advice more, and I’m so excited to check out Wikitravel and The Traveler’s Lunchbox!

  7. Janet Schiesl on May 5, 2021 at 3:51 pm

Great! Thanks Julie. I hope you learn something you can use on your next vacation.

I love the idea of taking a vacation! 2020 was the year of going nowhere, and I missed having time off and having a change of scenery. As things start to open up, we have a few things planned for this summer. But we aren’t ready to fly anywhere, so everything is within driving distance. Having that list IS the thing that keeps trips (and the to-dos) less stressful. I also create a temporary travel folder for each trip, so I have a place to put ideas and papers as I collect them. And before the trip, I organize the folder into categories (with stick-on tabs) if needed.

  9. Janet Schiesl on May 6, 2021 at 7:51 am

In 2020, I started a list of places I want to go. I don’t have any travel plans yet, but I’m thinking about it a lot.

Great tips! I LOVE to travel and we’re so happy to be getting out again. I use Trip Advisor all the time and Yelp too. However, we are dedicated carry-on only travelers. Everyone in my family has a backpack or occasionally I use a SMALL wheelie suitcase. Our bags are smaller than most “carry-ons” you see in the airport. It means we have to pack light but it also means repacking to come home is quick and easy and we spend less time dealing with luggage and more time enjoying the trip.

  11. Janet Schiesl on May 7, 2021 at 9:54 am

A great tip to carry less. I think it makes for a less stressful vacation.
