Quick Steps To a Fabulous Closet

Today I want to offer you some quick steps to a fabulous closet.

The most important step to clearing the clutter in your bedroom closet is to evaluate what you have. People tend to squirrel away odds and ends in the dark spaces of a closet.

Let me give you the most important advice first. Clear your closet of everything except clothing and accessories only. Nothing else. Move everything else out. Now you are ready to organize your closet!

Here are the quick steps to a fabulous closet.

  • To start, you should sort all your clothing into categories. You know – pants, sweaters, dresses, etc.
  • Now is the time to evaluate what should be kept. If you use it or love it, it stays. That’s the easy part.
  • However, if it doesn’t work for you today – it doesn’t fit now, it is worn out, or is out of style, let it go. I know it’s hard to do, but if it’s not working for you right now, it doesn’t deserve space in your closet.
  • Organize each category of clothing into the space in your closet that is most convenient for you.
  • Make maximum use of the floor, rods, and shelves.

    Good solid advice here, Janet.

Great advice! Keeping only clothing in the closet may be challenging for people with smaller homes. I found if people need to use their closet for other things, they can use the top shelves for items they do not use often like luggage and out-of-season clothing. It isn’t in the quick grab area and can easily be pulled down when they need it.

I agree with luggage and off-season clothing. They are still clothing-related. Especially in space is tight. But I often see picture frames, paperwork and craft supplies in a closet that need to find other homes.

If it doesn’t work for you now, but you really love it, you can keep it, but as you say, move it out of your primary closet. I have a few very fancy dresses that I rarely wear, so I keep them in the guest room.

It really is so much easier to maintain a closet that has a reasonable amount of clothing inside!

I agree with the reasonable amount of clothing. Since the start of the pandemic I have been rethinking what I have in my closet. Am I ever going to wear those fancy dresses again? Why am I keeping so many “nicer” shirts? Why not just keep a few that I like the best? Just trying to practice what I preach.

Smart advice. I have a disproportionately massive walk-in closet given that I just have a one-bedroom apartment, but it’s still hard for me to let go of clothing that I know made me look great (several decades and pounds ago). But you’re right, evaluating what you’ve got is key to letting go and restructuring what you keep!

You’re lucky to have a big closet! I don’t like to keep clothing that fit me many pounds ago, so they are easy to let them go. Funny how we are all different.
